J. C. Wright
In the Halfway House of Hearing
Wright’s profound songwriting is laid bare on forthcoming EP, In The Halfway House Of Hearing. The record is a deeply personal collection of folk-tinged songs dealing with themes of loss, longing, regret, guilt, substance and alcohol abuse, death, the afterlife and, ultimately, hope. Mesmerising throughout, the EP even contains a majestic, piano led '70s psych-inspired end of the world love song of the previously released single When There's Nowhere Left To Turn, with a video due to be released to accompany the full length EP version.
Wright's eclectic, yet melodic, songwriting style is dark and confessional at times, but often laced with playful inventiveness. Interspersed with unexpected arrangements and modulations, Wright's production and songwriting takes the listener on a journey through dark captivating vignettes and stunning soundscapes.
The sweeping nature of this journey is perfectly represented by the last two tracks. ‘Saudade Calling’ is a song of yearning and longing, as we the listener join Wright in a battle against the elements of life's storm. ‘The Fallen Few’ further highlights Wright’s craftsmanship. An epic, mournful folk song, it acts as a seance with the spirit world, in what is a conversation with, and remembering of, the dead. Written after the loss of two close friends who died within two years of each other, ‘The Fallen Few’ encapsulates the EP as a whole. Exploring themes of what the afterlife is, or if it even exists at all, it is a search for, and a direct appeal to, god.
In The Halfway House Of Hearing EP will be released 25th April 2025 on Clear Light Records via Declared Goods.
